Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham is one of my favorite collaborations in children's literature. Seeing a picture book from them immediately made me smile.

It's nothing earth shattering. It's nothing immediately spectacular. But a cat wanting to be a unicorn (despite its naysayers) is funny. And then unicorn who makes everything better.....oh it's just sweet.

In ITTY-BITTY KITTY-CORN, little Kitty thinks she's a unicorn by Shannon Hale, illustrated by, Leuyen Pham and published in 2021. This book was written for the age group of three to six-year-olds. In this book,  She prances and neighs like one, basks in her shadow, but Gecko and Parakeet jeer, insisting she's just a kitty. Kitty feels sad, and even seeing a real unicorn doesn't help until she realizes that the real, giant unicorn is actually kitty corn too! The two friends find comfort and happiness with very cute bright colors that would make any little girl love this book and lean into the magical world of a pink cat and a unicorn with purple hair! This is a great picture book as it is beautifully illustrated, engaging the reader further into the story with all the words on the pages! <picture book><fiction><funny><inspiring><lighthearted>

Small-Nicole, who was obsessed with unicorns and cats, would have absolutely adored this book. Present-Nicole, who is slightly less obsessed but nevertheless charmed, also adored this book. It's a very adorable and silly book about being yourself, whoever that may be, and not letting anyone else tell you you can't be whatever you want. I'm biased; I love Shannon Hale. But this one is too cute to pass up.

WELL I HAVE A NEW FAVORITE BOOK.
So stinkin' cute and a nice (but not overpowering) message about being who you are and who you dream to be.

This is one of those picture books where a dynamic duo comes together and produces something sadly subpar. I love the author's and the illustrator's work in general, but this story takes too long to get going, and relies too much on other animals' insults for the rhymes. I wouldn't want to read this with children to model the insults, and even though the ending is sweet, there isn't enough story before then to make it truly meaningful.
