This book has an interesting premise and delivers on it, for the most part. It explores themes of coming-of-age, family, friendship and trust. The world-building is my favorite aspect of this book: set in modern-day London within the things we cannot see (or what we think we cannot see). My main qualm with this book is its synopsis that sets an expectation that is not delivered in this book to a large degree, however, if you disregard the synopsis, it is still an excellent read. I look forward to reading the sequel and cannot wait to see what lies ahead for our protagonist.

This was such a wild ride of a book and completely unpredictable. The detail put into this world was astounding from the binders, the eye symbol, the details behind all the various magic languages and the family drama.

The mystery behind Anna’s magic was so intriguing , and I honestly saw nothing coming , from the family curse to Effie being a king list twin and Attis not being what he seems.

From revenge, to love/lust to betrayal this book was filled with chaos and although it was lengthy it was such a worthwhile read. I’ve never read a fantasy with such detailed magic systems, but despite their complexity it was enjoyable and not hard to follow.

The binders book extracts at the start of each chapter really added to the mystery behind their grove and was a creative edge which aided the world building. Overall, I loved this book and cannot wait for the sequel to find out where this curse takes Anna, effie and trying to protect the secret of witches in the world.

I feel like I connected to this book a bit more because I used to live near some of the locations. I could properly see Dulwich and imagine these four teenage girls trying to find a post box.

The world building was wonderful and there was so much that really made it an enjoyable read. In fact I read it quite quickly for me, but there were times when I wanted to speed up what was happening. It felt like it was taking too long to get to the reveals of who some of the characters were and what there part of the story was.

The whole bullying thread was a bit too much. Yes, it’s great that they all realise and learn from it, but it would have been nicer to see them learn their magic on something less petty and vengeful.
