I enjoyed elements of this book--the well-developed and nuanced main characters; the thoughtful, beautiful prose; and the reflections on the concepts of happiness and resilience. However, I'm not sure if there was a glitch in the ebook version that I read (possibly missing pages or pages out of order), because the sections jumped very abruptly at times, seemingly in the middle of various plot points. I also did not find the long interludes from the past to be compelling and skimmed through them to return to the main story. Overall, though, this was a good cozy winter read and thought-provoking storytelling.

I really wanted to like this book more. There are lots of good ideas here but I found the writing style a bit stiff for me and the plot is very slow and meandering. The flashbacks slowed things down even more.
