This book is astonishing. Funny, moving, and just one of the most original ideas for a story that I’ve come across in a long time.
3.5 stars. The most interestingly crafted character study I've read in a while, but doesn't land all the emotional heft it tries to convey.
Strong and heartbreaking writing here. Sad story of the comedian and the most devastating moment of his childhood. Is it a breakdown on stage? Or is it a break down? Fascinating, by turns hilarious and heartbreaking...the best joke? The one about his mother and himself having postpartum depression after he was born, but his has lasted 57 years!
It is a heavy read...with some jokes interjected of course with a good excuse.
It like how Dov reads the crowd, the author reads the readers feelings and changes the flow .
IS it disutive of the narrative may be sometime but it was intentional.
There were some moments that were delicate observations weaved
into the story with a put on comical perspective.
"Sometimes a slap is worth a thousand words"
Thats my Quote from this book :)

That was exhausting, and emotional, and raw. I feel like I need therapy after reading that book. Also, I'm pretty sure I need to start from the beginning and read it all over again, because I'm pretty sure I missed some details. At just under 200 pages, that is reasonable, and maybe necessary.
This is a dense book, with no chapter separations to distract or orient you.
Deserved all the awards it won.

Such an amazing piece of fiction. This story has won a Manbooker International and is a translation from Hebrew.
It is about a comedian having the last laugh or his last cry depending on which page you are in the book. It's a story about an Israeli stand up who lost his mother while he was away on a military course mandated through school curriculum. He is witty, sharp and depressed. All of which point towards him being excellent at his job. His audience doesn't know what he will talk about in his stand up and realise too late that their night of entertainment will end up being destroyed by his tale of despondency. Witnessing all this is his childhood friend who had lost touch with him and got invited last minute out of blue not knowing what to expect or how to feel.
It's a story of grief, loss and feeling of being out of place coated with cheap jokes so that you don't feel bitter & dejected the entire time reading it. Absolute masterclass.
