Haunting portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship, of the effects of Alzheimer’s… beautiful and devastating.

Boring and disjointed

“I believed that this want to be older meant that age would answer all my questions, that my desires would be fulfilled at a later date, but as the years pass and I wish for youth once more, the habit of waiting had already been instilled. It’s deeply ingrained, something I can’t seem to unlearn. I wonder if, when I’m old and frail and can see the shape of my end in front of me, I will still be waiting for the future to roll in. ”

Man... This was not easy to read. The story explores Antara and Tara's past in such a raw, human way. I know some people have complained that this book sometimes talks about things like sweaty armpits and crude depictions of sex.... I actually found it.. refreshing in a way? That the author did not try to prettify the reality she's woven for these characters. That's part of what made it such a compelling tale, to me. It's an ugly story about ugly people.. a story following the inner world of a woman choking on traumas past and present feeling like her life is less and less hers.  that's what made it stand out to me. I think I'll be pondering on this story for a while yet.
