Picked up 50% of the way through. Lots of world building at the start so was a longer start.

3.5 I write reviews for myself so I can remember if I liked a book. Anyone else completely forget a book the minute you finish? I will most likely read the second book when it comes out so this couldn’t have been that bad. I think in the end I just didn’t fully understand how or what had happened. I wasn’t grasping it. And a lot was left unanswered but maybe that’s to come. There was a lot of history and background to try to comprehend but it did come together for the most part. I did like the characters and rooted for them. But this wouldn’t be my recommendation for someone just getting into to romantasy, not the best of the genre.

re-read edit: my re-read is completed in time to read the arc of A Crown So Silver!

4.25 stars -- I recommend the audiobook of this one if you like Irish folklore, twisty magic, and angsty characters. I'm very excited about book 2!

Much of this story is actually nonsensical as is much of the descriptive writing (he smelled like ice cubes type of descriptions) however for someone that likes forest magic, retellings of The Swan Princess, some spice, and deception this book still worked for me. In truth I overlooked much of what could be questioned to just enjoy the atmospheric ride. I will say, the reader will see a lot of the twists coming but there is still a moment towards the end that I didn’t expect and liked what the author chose.

Fia is a manipulated half female/half fae living in the mortal world with amnesia of her first half of childhood. She’s always longed for her mentally abusive mother, the Queen, to love her unconditionally. So much of how her character behaves can be tied to the way she was given an inch of love but never enough.
SpoilerIn the end I became frustrated that she didn’t unleash her forest magic fully to take down Eala. She has a superpower and she didn’t just wrap that fool up in vines!?!?!

The two love interests were fine. I never felt attached to them but they didn’t annoy me either. I did become tired of one of them constantly being described in terms of moonlight. I also wasn’t a fan of the “jelly belly” moment. You can have dialogue that explains a man’s six pack without such negative language about people that don’t.

SpoilerI’m always a fan of a woman maturing, accepting herself and growing along with the love interest that moves with her rather than wanting her to hold back.

I will be picking up the next book but this was also a book that took me time to get through and didn’t stay with me when I put the book away on my shelf. I never felt that invested in any of the characters but there are elements that will keep me coming back.

This book is so beautifully written. The way they described things with flowers sprouting when she walks around in the forest and animals in the ferry realm. It’s just beautiful to hear about the atmosphere. The story is told within. And it’s a beautiful love story, spicy but with plot, and you don’t quite know at first where it will end. I really enjoyed it.
