A fast read, great writing and characters.  This is a book that I will be thinking about for some time. Sadly, it reflects some horrible truths about society today. This is such an emotional book, especially the ending. Although the reader is warned in the beginning that this is a tragedy it was still shocking. At first I found the point of view a bit jarring, and it felt like it pulled me out of the story at times, but stylistically I understand the decision for using this point of view and overall I think it does add to the story.

Writing was, at times, too on-the-nose. Ending was beautifully written. Touched on familiar tensions in a way I didn’t see coming.

This was a sad read. I figured there would be more casualties.

A compelling read, well written, but I was turned off by whether this author should be writing a story about Black pain. I get that this book was written earlier, but it was released this year, in 2020, and comes off as tone-deaf.

Fantastic book. Racism is a major theme—and without saying too much—the horrible effects it can have on innocent people’s lives.

DID NOT FINISH: 32%

After reading 100 pages, I just could not go on. Not only was this extremely boring, I detested the use of an all-knowing entity narrator (in this case, the neighborhood) that provided insight and opinions into almost everything. It completely took me out of the story.

All characters are very one-dimensional, with some that are so unlikeable (and not in a good way). All this made it feel like homework to pick it up.
