The first half was so much better than the first book, but lost its momentum fast, to the point that I barely wanted to finish it. Still, the bones and worldbuilding are good, and that first half was a REALLY fun read despite the fact that Kell and Lila are my least favorite characters. Schwab deserves praise for making me enjoy a series so much even when I dislike the main protagonists.

Even though the first half was very slow, once I got into Essen Tach I was HOOKED. And the last 50 pages had me failing to breathe. Immediately jumping into the next!!

I put off reviewing this forever. But from what I remember I generally liked it. The characters are fun and interesting but the plot kind of goes no where the entire time and was pretty pointless to the overall series arc except for the last 30 pages or something. World building was pretty interesting though.

This second book in the series felt a little bit like a bridge between the first and third book. Like some extremely well-written bonus-chapters. Still, VE Schwab did an amazing job. It remained entertaining, even with so many fights in the competition. Kell and Rhy were once again amazing chatacters and Alucard and his whole crew were lovely as well. Only Lila felt a little bit too much "not like other girls" to me.

I actually enjoyed this more than the first, it was hard to put down! The character development in this series has been so good.
