Yes. I liked the time on the ship with Alucard, I greatly enjoyed the Essen Tasch magic competition and how
both Lila and Kell sneaked into it but of course didn’t fight one another for ages. I knew Holland and his protégée Ojka would eventually get Kell and what a cliffhanger to end on! As I got closer to the end I was reading frantically to find out what would happen.

Phenomenal. that is the only word that can describe this book. I am absolutely kicking myself for not reading V E Schwab sooner but she's become one of my top authors. Her writing style, masterful character work, intimate cast and well thought out worldbuilding with no melodrama or contrived tropes makes this truly the full package for me.

This book is just as character driven, well paced and action packed at the first. The opening chapter is the most fun and entertaining thing I've ever read and Lila is definitely my favourite. The character work in the book in general is incredible and everything I could want. We start to see how Kell's experiences in the first book have changed him, leaving him restless and craving power which terrified him, how he and Rhy are adjusting to their magic bond, and how Lila is trying to stop self sabotaging herself by fearing settling down. They all have to fight their demons and it's a joy to read about.

We also get a bigger view of Red London's world, with the introduction of the neighbouring countries, which helps give the book some more diversity. The implementation of the tournament was masterful as Schwab twists the stakes to be whether Kell or Lila will be found out and punished, possible jeopardizing political relations, not life or death, and this made it far more relevant and gripping. The fights were excellent and they so reflect the personalities of Kell and Lila, with Kell being more mindful and experienced while Lila is like a brawler in a pit fight, clawing for every victory.

I also liked how Holland makes a return, making a deal with the devil that goes awry all because he wants a better White London. We also get some new faces like Alucard and while his name was super distracting (Castlevania fans you know) he proved to be a fun foil to Lila and his relationship to Kell was also enjoyable.

We also get a few more reveals about magic but there's still a lot of mystery, particularly the whole 'is Lila an Antari' and I hope the third book will resolve this.

Really excited to jump into the third book and I have high hopes V E Schwab will stick the landing!
