Book 2 of the trilogy brings in some delightful new characters, including Captain Alucard Emery, who takes in Lila Bard as his ship’s master thief. Emery's past is revealed with a connection to Prince Rye. We also meet magicians from other kingdoms for the upcoming “Essen Tasch,” an elemental magic competition for wizards of all major nations. The event gives you the vibe of somewhere between the Hunger Games competition and the Harry Potter Tri-Wizard tournament. But amidst the games and characters reconnecting, political trickery is afoot, and enemies thought dead from other Londons find their way back to Red London.
I must admit that I am quickly becoming a V.E. Schwab fan girl! I love her depth of description with character emotions, small movements, gorgeous scenery, and the flow of magic. She pulls you into such an intimate connection with her characters that you will cheer them on when they succeed and gasp when it seems all is lost.
I also love how she promotes diversity in this trilogy and her other books. Lila Bard breaks the traditional female gender roles and does so unapologetically. As it's revealed that Rye and Emery are not entirely heterosexual, Schwab uses the relationship to hold up a mirror to our society’s mixed reception of alternate sexualities, which she portrays in each character's family reactions.

Vafan... Det är så otroligt mycket i den här boken som bara pratas om och inte visas???? Att Kell är #1 Magic man i världen?? Han suger ju?? Jag vet inte om det är för att alla scener med magi är superförvirrande och inte särskilt lätta att följa men asså ser inte varför ingen annan skulle kunna vara bättre än honom (när han dessutom blir utklassad av Holland i första boken).
Rhy skulle väl ha blivit helt jävla förstörd av vad Adelard gjorde? Eller? Varför är han då helt på att hångla sönder grabben när de ses för första gången och sen visar han NOLL tecken på att ha någon slags inre konflikt över detta??? Det hade kunnat vara så bra angst och förvirring och känslor men istället verkar Kell bara dum i huvudet som inte ser att allting är fine och om/när det här utvecklas i bok tre kommer det säkert vara så att ojojoj addelard var ett as men han förbättrar sig. Men var var det i den här boken?! Det var ju nu det skulle etableras och istället kommer komma från ingenstans!! Och om det inte blir så kommer Kell bara se petty och dum ut. Vilket hade varit fine om det är så han är men det är ju inte heller etablerat??? Ugh.
Tror mest jag är bitter över att den här boken var egentligen precis vad jag ville ha. Att den sket i all lore typ hela boken och istället hade relationsdrama och typ OS i magi men det är så dåååååligt genomfört. Eller hade i alla fall kunnat vara såååå mycket bättre ;(((.
Så precis som första boken tyckte jag den saknade emotionellt djup och även om den här boken hade mer potential än första är det just därför den får lägre betyg, för att den inte levererar på möjligheterna :/.
