I cried and cried, but in the end I was left with a heartwarming feeling.

this book is quiet, but by no means gentle-- despite reading the reviews of it I was not prepared for the physical and social violence that was in store. I suppose the constantly neutral tone and broad scope created distance for the reader, as with a fairytale, but the residents of this village seemed very spiteful and ill-intentioned toward one another and reading it felt like being trapped in a beige nightmare.

I chose this because I had to read a book set in Armenia, and I'm really glad I did. I loved the switching POV and the way this book was unstuck in time. It reminded me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Told in three parts, Three Apples Fell from the Sky is set in a remote village in Armenian mountains. The first and third parts focus on Anatolia, who at the age of 58 wakes up one day to find she is bleeding once again. Initially, she believes that she is dying and makes preparations for her passing. The middle part tells the story of another family, with a slightly noble ancestry. The remote aspect of the village and the delicious food described play a large part in this book, which is warmly written and full of resilience.
