The Soul of a Woman // by Isabel Allende
I have been looking forward to reading this for a long time. I have a different title signed by her at home but really liked the look of this one and wanted it to be the first one I read. I really enjoyed the storytelling in the style of a memoir and being able to learn so much about the history, change, and progress she has encountered in her life. I really can't wait to read her other books after this. What an introduction to this author! I do wish it would've been a little longer and also think that some of her opinions about women and what they want are a bit generalized and perhaps even a little outdated to an extent, but seeing where she came from and what she's experienced, I can't say I'm very surprised. What an awesome example she has set for other people to build on!
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

"Feminism is the radical notion that, as Marie Shear said, women are people."
"We want the kind of world where peace, empathy, decency, truth, and compassion prevail. Above all, we want a joyful world. That is what we, the good witches, want."

This book is part memoir, part lesson in feminism, and all Allende. There’s something about her writing that’s always just so warm and appreciated, so that was — as always — a treat. As far as the actual content, a lot of the memoir aspects weren’t necessarily new if you’ve read some of her work before. Many of the feminism tidbits felt a little outdated to me; I understand that she’s nearing 80 and her perspective on things will differ from mine, but at times I couldn’t help but roll my eyes just a little. That said, it’s a fine introduction to Allende and the kinds of stories she likes to tell.
I’d recommend this to existing Allende fans and young feminists looking to learn from an elder.

i always love a good nonfiction about feminism. its also refreshing to see an older woman share her experiences, through loss and grief, through rage and regret, through years and years of just living. loved it
