I really enjoyed this. It's certainly gloomy, but well worth it. Elizabeth Gaskell does an amazing job with characters.

This was good, but I might enjoy it more if I read it again. The book is written as a series of conflicts. The content is rich so I'm sure that I have missed points on some of the conflicts. For the most part, the story is beautifully written. The only let-down was the ending which was abrupt and unlike the rest of the story, slowly and carefully developed.

4.5 stars. I like this book because I love Mr Thornton and Margaret Hale's story and because the BBC's television adaptation portrayed it so excellently (I think it's actually better than the book).

But it is also so long, and I don't really like Mr Higgins. It is also quite paternalistic.

There's a lot of death, which isn't unreasonable, but some of the deaths seem too convenient. It reminds me of the way Mr Knightley talks about Frank Churchill at the end of Emma.

The book came out in 20 episodes, but apparently Mrs Gaskell had planned for 22 and had to compress the end. So although the book feels way too long, it gets wrapped up way too quickly.

I listened to the audiobook read by Heather Wilds. Her narration is a masterpiece.

This (2024) is my fourth reading. My previous rating was 3 stars.

Absolutely adored this book - it's shot right up into my top 5 favourite classics. I can't adequately express my feelings about it at the moment, other than gushing about how much I loved it (and in particular Mr Thornton!)
