this was a very enjoyable read, the first classic ive read in a little while (that wasn’t a reread) and it makes me wonder how i went so long without reading one! and how it took me so long to get round to this book

the topics and themes were extremely interesting and well written and although the actual romance element was small it was very satisfying and had somehow has more tension than anything that could be written today

id definitely read this again and im sure if i did it would be touching a spot in my favourites.

north & south reads like a moment in time, including day-to-day life, labour struggles, and social disparities in 1850s england. all of this forms the background for a love story i was excited to see develop. i really enjoyed their discussions in the book's first half

but was disappointed by the lack of interaction after the proposal

.

the fact that john changed his way of thinking/became more involved with his workers on his own and not to please margaret (which i thought was going to happen) was great.

in the end,

i would've loved to see them happy together and was consequently sad about the abrupt ending.

I hated Margaret's attitude toward most people but loved the quiet, sweet side of her.  Her parents were awful and were not fair to her at all.  I hated the labor/strike plot but loved the last two chapters.
