This was so good (despite the religiousity and the many weird anti-irish comments, which are unfortunately par for the course for Victorian Lit).

Not as good as Jane Eyre. It had the set up for a really good romance, but the second half did not deliver! It dragged on way too long and then wrapped everything up in a single page. The resolution was very disappointing.

However, when she returns home from a stay with her Aunt and Cousin, she is shocked to learn that her father, a parson in a small village, has had a change of beliefs and must leave the church. Deciding that it would be too painful to say in a place of so many memories and good times, Mr. Hale decides to move to an industrial town in the north. One of their first acquaintances in Milton, is a Mr. Thornton. Their relationship is quite rocky, and takes many ups and downs. The story continues to follow Margret as she copes with tragedy, apprehension, and misunderstandings. In the end, the tragedy is not quite so painful, the apprehension is alleviated, and the misunderstandings are all cleared up.

I really enjoyed North and South, though at times it seemed slow. It did keep me reading. I did not enjoy it as much as Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters. I don't agree with many of the things that Margaret did, but as I think about it, I am pretty sure I would have done the same or similar.
It is strange that I can't think of too much to say on this, beyond what I already said. The book was good, but not a favorite.

Novela escrita por Elizabeth Gaskell, teniendo como heroína a Margaret Hale, una joven oriunda del sur de Inglaterra, la cual intenta dar nuevos frescos de interés en el mundo industrial del norte. Es un texto social, ambientada durante la Revolución industrial inglesa. Norte y Sur es un enfrentamiento entre las órdenes establecidas, donde el amor y la clase asoman sus intereses. Una historia de amor, crecimiento y cambio, que terminó publicándose en 1855 en la revista semanal Household Words del escritor Charles Dickens.
El texto comienza con Margaret Hale cuando se estaba preparando para la boda de su prima Edith con el Capitán Lennox. Después de la celebración, regresó al pueblo de Helstone, donde su padre era vicario. Había pasado los últimos diez años viviendo con su tía y su prima y ahora esperaba con ansias la vida idílica de Helstone con sus padres. Tanto Margaret Hale, que representa el Sur, y al otro extremo John Thornton representando el Norte, ambos buscan encontrar un equilibrio en aquel mundo caótico.

Really enjoyed the characters and enemies to lovers. Reminds me a lot of Pride and Prejudice with the main characters. John Thornton is definitely a Darcy and Margaret an Elizabeth. A bit slowpaced but I loved watching the show North and South prior to reading so I could really picture everyone and all the settings. I liked the imagery and language. I thought the quotes at the beginning of each chapter a fun foreshadowing of the emotion of the chapter. I would read/listen to again. Definitely think about the story/characters after reading.
A pleasant book for it's time- As a fan of Jane Austen I felt this was quite similar in a good way. Although I did feel the ending was quite abrupt, I enjoyed the book as a whole, especially the character of Margaret and the Higgins family.
