This book is a great story about the importance of unions and not crossing a picket line....unless the boss is hot apparently.

Obsessed. Enthralled. In awe.
It's pride and prejudice if it had Darcy's Pov. Its also so much more than a romance, with a really intriguing depiction of class dynamics in Gaskell's time.
The last 10% of the book does drag a little but that is made up for by literally everything else in this fantastic read.

I wish Thornton and Margaret would kiss but I guess I'll have to watch the BBC mini-series for that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I loved the growth of the characters most of all (and the ruin of their prejudices) though, so I'm quite satisfied ;)

We needed more time with Thornton and Margaret. I like slow burns but that was a little too slow.

I couldn’t bear not giving this a 5 stars so I am. I absolutely adore these characters. Poor Margaret is so unfortunate and if I was in her place I would think I have been cursed. To lose so many beloved people in her life in such short amount of time. And John Thornton with his suppressed obsession is just what a classic hero is supposed to be. I have watched the BBC miniseries countless times and so I thought it was high time I read the source material. Most everything was loyal to the book except I really do love the train scene at the end of the miniseries much better than I do the books ending. I know! Blasphemy! But there it is.

Though the book was good, this is one of the few books of which I have to say I liked the movie better. The writing quality just wasn't as good as I expected. Still, it was an enjoyable read.

I think of this book as the Pride and Prejudice of the Industrial Revolution.
While I enjoyed it, I feel that 200 pages could have been cut out and it would have been even better. A lot of the descriptions had archaic language or references to things that aren't well known to today's readers. I felt like banging my head against the wall every time she wrote sate instead of sat. This is my second Gaskell read and I'm starting to feel that I enjoy her movies more than her books. I really want to enjoy all her work but she takes so long to get to it that it's not as enjoyable as I wished.
