Wonderful story! Extremely interesting and delves into difficult subjects such as master/worker and death while having a romantic story. I really love romantic stories, and having already loved Pride and Prejudice I knew this would be a good read.

The BBC movie version with Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage is a more than fair version of this novel.

I've been meaning to read North and South for years. I'm so glad I finally did! It was a wonderful read, especially thanks to some excellent book group discussions.

Quite the perfect story. Thoroughly enjoyed every page of it!

pride and prejudice but make it industrial

jk, that’s pretty reductive of the work as a whole. docked a star because it dragged in places and Gaskell has a weird tendency for uncomfy bodily descriptions??

Victorians are usually very bad at romance and this was actually pretty compelling, as well as addressing some complex social issues that we’re still dealing with today.

Off to rewatch the miniseries

A remarkable story, one that will linger in my mind for many years.

Margaret Hale's life is upended when her father leaves the Church of England and uproots the family to the north of England to a manufacturing town. There Margaret finds herself navigating the loss of her beloved home town, and familiarity with the sights, smells, and customs of a new way of life in the north of England.

John Thornton is a self made man, after his father's death, John is left to salvage his family's reputation to provide for his mother and sister. His success is due to his tenacity and sharp business acumen. Mr. Thornton befriends the Hale family, of which Margaret catches his eye.

A beautiful novel, one I thoroughly enjoyed reading, it delivered on every level. This is a slow burn novel, packed with literary commentary on 19th century England, the church, work unions, wealth versus poverty, and so much more.
