Pippi is absurd! What fun!

Read aloud with a five-year-old who regularly asked for clarification where none was available. A good experience.

Pippi is an icon

Who couldn't love Pippi? I had so much fun laughing at her silly ways and listening to her silly stories. Her story, however, is a bit heartbreaking.

We read this after the first two Ramona books, and I’m making the 6yo write a compare-and-contrast essay of these two classic literary heroines. (Just kidding.) (Or am I?)

I would recommend this book as a family read with parents explaining things to the children. Naturally, Pippi is a motherless, has grown up at sea, and currently has no adults in her life, so not all her actions are commendable. She does lie a great deal (hence the star removed) but generally mentions it was a lie and sometimes acts sorry that she lies, though it is never actually condemned. Apparently, the newer editions has taken out some of the cultural references, so I'd recommend this one (though the illustrations aren't that nice) or another older one.

For fun, here are a few quotes:

"Aren't you going to dry the floor?" asked Annika
"Oh, no, it can dry in the sun" answered Pippi. I don't think it will catch cold so long as it keeps moving."

"Say, Pippi," said Tommy respectfully, "why do you wear such big shoes?"
"So I can wiggle my toes, of course," she answered.

I had to read this for class. Pippi lowkey insane

That’s a big ole nope for me

I do not have the patience for a character like Pippi…

4.5 stars. I never really liked this book during my childhood I was much more of an Enid Blyton type of girl. However now as I have gotten older I understand things that would have gone over my head as a child. Is this a life changing book for me personally. No. However the reason this book gets such a high rating is because of the story it tells in the time period that it was published. This book was published in 1945 and back then women and girls had to act all prim and proper. So for Astrid to right a book about an outspoken girl is quite an achievement. Especially for it to do so well. I take my hat off to you Astrid.
