adventurous emotional funny relaxing medium-paced

I recently became a boring adult with a full time job, so I had to revisit this book from childhood to help me feel like a real human being again.

Like Babar, Pippi Longstocking is one of those classic children’s books I never read as a kid but picked up as an adult, only to find that what might have been considered whimsical and charming decades ago is now just bizarre/borderline disturbing?

Pippi has independence and decision-making power. She is also creative and imaginative. She is strong and exotic. It would seem like she has been everywhere and has done ‘everything.’ Her two friends are kids who play by society’s rules. How outrageous it would truly seem to these two friends to have a friend who could set her own hours, choose to go to school, discuss her world travels, and have unusual animals in the house.

All real-life kids would like to feel they can do anything. Pippi puts bullies and burglars in their place without violence, just inner strength mostly (though she is the strongest girl in the world). She amuses herself using her imagination as “thing finder” teaching us that you do not need expensive toys to have fun.

Pippi is out of place socially and this is the one area where you can tell she is not totally happy with her life of independence. She admits that she makes things up, which perhaps reveals an attempt to make up for what is missing in her life. Her outrageous behaviors, however, are hilarious and endearing.

It would be ideal if a couple of words such as “gay” and “rubbers” could be modernized, but otherwise this is a book for children of all decades.

Such a fun and silly classic book! Have loved the dubbed Swedish film for years but never actually read it. My 7y/o and I loved reading and giggling over this together ❤️

Pippi is so amazing. I read this book with my daughter, and I'm honestly not sure which one of us enjoyed it more. Pippi is an inspiration to boys and girls alike and I would love to live in a world full of strong-willed, colorful individuals like her.

I remember watching the movie when i was younger. the movie ending is much better when her cannibal king father comes to take her back to be a cannibal princess.

i thought the part where she was talking about her grandmother's maid was very funny though.

Utterly delightful. It has been awhile since I’ve visited Pippi. She was my true childhood idol. How how I would have loved a monkey, a horse, a bag of gold the the super-human strength to ward off grown-ups who tried to spoil all the fun.

Favorite Things challenge: Cream colored ponies (The book never said the horse was white, but we all know it was)
