“The Atlas Six“ was not what I expected at all!
The first thing that surprised me was the writing style: the sentences were more complex and the words more complicated than I’m used to (English is my second language but I mostly read English books). I got into it after a few chapters and thought that it fit the academic setting quite nicely. It impacted my reading experience though because it brought my reading pace down by quite a bit. I usually finish a book of this length in 1-3 sittings but this took me about 6.

What I loved most about this book was that it kept me guessing until the very last page. I like it when books allow me to form theories about the direction the plot is taking and I LOVE it when it turns out that I‘m completely wrong. Even better when I can see that the clues were there all along and everything makes sense in retrospect. I‘m usually quite good at predicting where a story is headed but here I had no clue (I guessed one thing correctly but that was only a small fraction of what was actually happening).

I also enjoyed the concept of looking at magic in a scientific way and the characters using it for research purposes. The book gave me major thriller vibes in a sense that I was constantly on the edge of my seat and waiting for something shocking to happen. During my reading process I couldn‘t tell if I actually liked the book and I told my boyfriend that it would probably come down to the ending. If the build up had been for nothing, I would have given it about 3 stars but the ending did not disappoint. Loved it!

I thought about giving it 5 stars but even though I got used to the writing style, I didn’t like that it slowed down my reading pace, so I landed on 4.5.

SO GOOD. whatever you think you're getting into, it's more. complex relationships, well thought out character development and challenging magic system.

Reading the first pages I didn't have many expectations but I was nicely surprised by the complexity of the characters. Now I am kind of curious about how will the story continue, although the revelation made me feel like the antagonist turned into a simple caricature of a villain (hopefully their motivations and personality will be further explored so they feel more complex and interesting)

i don't usually read fantasy nowadays but this is part of my book club with my sister and she chose! i was hesitant about this one as i didn't think i would like it and i wasn't too keen about starting a series, but i found the characters to be interesting enough where i ended up getting hooked. most of the characters are unlikeable tbh, but at the same time, i was intrigued by their stories and character arcs. i found parisa and dalton to be the most interesting. the writing can be a little wordy and pretentious at times. i might end up continuing the series just to see what happens with each character as i found them more interesting than the main plot itself.

objectively 3.5⭐, subjectively 5⭐ because i'm clawing the walls thinking about these characters. 4.25⭐ feels about right

i wanted something vaguely similar to tvd/ove by chloe gong and i wanted characters being petty and arguing a lot. i got it and i had an incredible time with it >:)

really the only thing that genuinely bothered me was the way the second-to-last chapter was formatted. it would've been such an interesting revelation from anyone else's pov, but the way it was just laid out for the reader felt quite underwhelming. still a good plot twist though, and i'm very intrigued to see where it leads!

side note on the pairings:
why nico and libby enemies to lovers????? when gideon and nico have literally the most tender friendship i've read in a while?????? when they clearly love each other too much and would AND CONTINUOUSLY DO everything for each other?????? i'm the first to appreciate a well-written friendship but like. come ON. if they don't end up together i will riot. it's nico and libby's friendship that i actually want to see, enemies to friends is simply superior
