This was a super quick audiobook.

I decided to read the book because I saw it recommended on book tok and I really thought the premise sounded really interesting.

It was at times funny and at times dark. I think that reading from the mountain lions perspective was kind of fresh and interesting.

The way the humans of LA were portrayed was funny and actually fairly honest. I think that the way homelessness in LA was explored was FASCINATING. It’s truly a story you could have only gotten from the mountain lion’s perspective, so I thought it was very clever to explore that storyline and piece together how truly horrible humans are toward each other.

The storyline with little slayer was a little fantastical, but I think the way that experience contrasted with the ending was a good touch. For such a short book, it’s a pretty powerful story with a REALLY powerful (suspenseful) ending.

Some parts of the mind of a wild cat felt too human I.e.
how did it have  a dream about Disney? Did it really learn all of those details from hikers? And how did it understand the inside of a car before ever seeing one?
Nitpicks aside, it felt like a deeply insightful poem with plot. The ending made me want to reach into the cover to find out what happened next.

look, i only read this book because the summary made it sound insane but now that i've read it, every single summary seriously misrepresents both the story and the tone

things the summary accurately reflects:
a) the story is about a mountain lion
b) who lives in LA below the hollywood sign

some of the rest is partially accurate but some is not even close. truly baffling???? based on the summaries i thought i would hate it but also have fun reading it and i can honestly say i did neither.

compelling though. the writing style i think will be hit-and-miss for people but it worked for me

Wow. Unbelievably impactful for such a short book. Sometimes funny and sometimes heart wrenching. I really had no idea what to expect but man, I’m absolutely blown away. It’s such a brilliant critique of the world and capitalism and hatred. Very well executed.

(Definitely not a book for everyone though)

Beautifully written, totally inventive, very thought provoking. One of the stranger books I’ve read and not something I’d normally read. But a friend recommended it and it did not disappoint.

this is PERFECTION. the cougar is so damn endearing and eloquent and believable as a storyteller despite being unable to express himself with words. I highlighted entire chapters at a time (granted the chapters were quite brief but still). also made me hate humans even more than usual but they for sure deserve it (in this book and irl tbh). long live big cats everywhere!
