4.5 rounded down - it was slightly difficult for me to keep track of all the characters and I’m not sure all the loose ends were tied up enough for me
Chris Bohjalian writes SUCH unique novels and The Lioness is no exception. Classic Hollywood glam mixed with Russians, kidnapping, and safari. This book is graphic and detailed - at times almost stomach-turning - and full on suspense. I couldn’t put it down even when I felt grossed out or upset. Another hit!

Just alright. Not great. There were too many characters and too many backstories that continued to interrupt the plot and lose my interest throughout it.
And then none of it really mattered in the end so I could’ve done without half the book and been just fine.

It's very seldom that I finish a book and feel that the story would be better experienced as a movie. I love the idea and the story, but I feel as though with the number of flashback scenes in each chapter, the story would transfer better in film form. Overall well researched and written book, however.
I enjoyed the short chapters in this book from each characters point of view. The flashbacks helped build a picture of their lives: what they have shared and what they haven’t, what they’re thinking behind the outward facade.
The story was engaging enough that I wanted to keep going. The actual reveal was a little mundane after the build up and predictable but that was OK. It was more about the characters than the plot device in my opinion.

Lots of characters, lots of different points of view, lots of backstory. I found it disjointed and hard to stay interested b/c just as something interesting happens, it switches. Didn't quite hit the mark for me. 3 stars.
God, I hated everything I read in June. Yikes. I thought this was a snooze too. I liked Bojangles’ Red Lotus but this just felt like two books that barely connected. I just wanted all the characters to get eaten by a hyena and call it a day.
Okay so this book is great. It’s so original and I love how the story is pieced together. There’s a lot of characters which kinda took a minute to keep straight but definitely one of the best books so far this year!
I didn’t enjoy this book. Too many characters, too many themes, not enough depth to any of them. Every time there seemed to be some tension building, it shifted to another POV. I don’t want to give anything away, but the more I think about it, the entire construction of the story just didn’t work for me. And in the end, the reveal of the motive of the kidnapping just felt blah, too on the nose.
Maybe I’ll like a different Bohjalian novel more. Any recommendations?

A suspenseful book set in Serengeti in 1964. Lots of action --- a good read.
