Solid 3 stars. SO many characters to keep track of. Super interesting premise and unique storyline, which was refreshing. I was torn between rating this as slow vs. medium-paced but despite the adventurous tone/setting, it was by no means fast-paced. Honestly this sort of scares me to go on a safari at any point in my life LOL
I was hooked into the story from the first words. A suspenseful ride that even though I knew where it was headed as far as the fate of many of the characters, I still was hopeful. The reasons behind the kidnapping are slowly revealed as we get to know the people on both sides all in the midst of the beautiful yet threatening African landscape. This is the 19th book by Chris Bohjalian that I have read and he never disappoints.

A great page turner
This is a pretty darn good story. The setting is 1960's Africa. An American actress takes a group of people on Safari with her and her new husband, David. They get kidnapped, right away...
I absolutely loved that with each chapter we get to know one of the folks on Safari. We get a bit of back story and then we are whisked back into the present kidnapping. We get a look inside the mind of each person living through the event.
Here is what I didn't love; there are just so many characters that it distracted from the story. If you are a fan (like me) of Chris Bohjalian, then you will enjoy this book. Even with all the characters in this book, the storyline and character development is fantastic!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Doubleday Books for this advanced readers copy. This book is scheduled for release on May 10, 2022.

I had a hard time caring about these characters. There didn't seem to be much of an arch to the story. Not sure if my experience was colored by reading this book in snippets. I may have liked it more if I'd sat down to read for a couple of uninterrupted hours.
Wow! This was fabulous, start to finish. Having been to Africa, I was really looking forward to reading this one, and it did not disappoint!
Fast paced, funny and fun. Not the most polished writing style, but it was fun enough for a quick read.
