The People Remember is written by Ibi Zoboi and illustrated by Loveis Wise. This informational picture book was published on September 28th, 2021. It tells the story of African descendants in America, beginning in Africa and ending in current America. Throughout the book, the author includes the seven principles of Kwanzaa and connects them to the inspiring history. This book provides a hopeful and inspiring tone to the severe history African Americans have endured. I enjoyed reading this informational story and think it is a necessary book to have in the classroom. I found it appropriate for an upper elementary or middle school student. Younger students might enjoy it as well but it might be difficult for them to truly understand. The illustrations and lyrical narrative combined in this book reveal an important, difficult history that everyone should try to understand, especially the younger generation. I might use this book in the classroom when teaching about race or African American history. I might also use it when teaching poetry as it has beautiful, descriptive text. I didn't find anything problematic about it. It has more information and resources at the end which I found helpful. <Race> <African-American> <Informational> <Unity> <Hope>
Excellent reminder of the great ancestors we come from, and the hope we carry because of them. I can’t resist anything penned by Ibi Zoboi, she is simply AMAZING!!! The illustrations are phenomenal; Loveis Wise is one to look out for in the future.
