This came out of left field. Picked it up after reading some impressive reviews and I'm glad I did. Macgyver on Mars is an apt description but it is more like a "stranded on a deserted island" story. Weir kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the book, even though I was pretty sure I knew what was going to happen. Great read.

This was my first foray into sci-fi and I adored it! I was laughing and crying with Mark through his ordeals.

I really, really, enjoyed this. Mark was absolutely hilarious, and I laughed out loud a lot while reading this book, and every time I did was because of him. I didn't expect this to be so funny - I'd heard it was funny, but I still didn't expect it. I honestly couldn't put this book down, it was that good. And while the scientific parts really confused me, I got the general gist of things and I could still enjoy the book while understanding what was going on - Mark's 'pirate-ninja' stand-in for a complicated term made me giggle, and it also made reading that science-y part a lot more fun!

I'd definitely recommend this book.

Edit (2nd read): enjoyed it just as much as the first time, and in 6 years I'd managed to forget enough that there were still some surprises.

The pacing was fantastic! Had me on the edge of my seat. Main character needed more personality and emotions instead of anger and silliness. Some parts felt like a text book but I did like the science stuff for the most part. Not really my kind of book but would recommend if you’re  really into science.

OK, first of all, let me start this review with the positives. I loved the goofy and optimistic narrative mark has, it’s very amusing and contagious!. Although.. I saw a lot of people complaining about how unrealistic it was... um hello? its a science FICTION story! it is not supposed to be realistic!. Not really a spoiler but Commander Lewis and Mark's relationship is so remarkable, I loved them. The only thing I disliked about this book (not the book’s fault) is that it contains a chunk of mechanical stuff that I couldn’t exactly comprehend, but I did learn a little about the structure of spacecraft and it’s necessities and components which is pretty cool. I’ve been having a good time reading it, though sometimes I forced myself because as I mentioned before, some pages would only talk about mechanics. 4/5. It never failed to put a smile on my face.
