Overall I wanted to like this book more than I did. The plot is fine, and Doric is a great character, but ultimately the book as a whole falls flat due to the writing style. We're meandering our way through so much telling instead of showing. Rarely will you feel transported into the story, setting r character's state of mind; instead you will be told things with the briefest of brushstrokes.

Worth a read only if you're interested in more of the character's backstory, decidedly not a great book on it's own - especially as the overall plot is merely setup for the movie and therefore remains largely unsolved and open in this novel.

It’s a pleasant surprise to read a movie-tie in novel that actually has a good story, good writing, doesn’t rely entirely on the movie, and develops a character and their backstory so expertly. It’s not a masterpiece, but it is a fun, heartfelt read.

I’ve read some of EK Johnston’s Star Wars stuff, which is so rigorously cross-checked for canon compliance that it really caught me off guard how inconsistent this book is with the movie. There’s not much of a plot to speak of here, and the plot that is here doesn’t make much sense, but it’s a fun vibey character study. I could read Johnston write about weird magic forever.

I loved this. I finished reading it the night before I went and saw the movie, and I thought it was a really great companion novel. And honestly, if anything, I enjoyed Doric more in the book than in the movie--but with an ensemble cast, it might just be that we didn't get to see her as closely as a novel allows. Her characterization through the novel is great, and I could feel myself taking inspiration from her being a druid and thinking more about my own druid character for DND. What I liked best from this though is the backstory for Doric wildshape-ing into an owlbear, since that just gets glossed over for the most part in the movie
