I. Loved. This. Book. Oh my goodness. All of the characters were so amazing and the way things weaved together! And there was so much representation. I thought the whole “being stuck on a train thing” was done in a cool way as well. Having a story that took place in one particular setting could have been hella boring, but there’s so much more going on in this book as well so it doesn’t feel boring at all! This will probably be a reread for me at some point (and I definitely want a physical copy of this one as I listened to it this time!)

Things I liked:
  • The characters. They were endearing and loveable and diverse. And so queer. It always surprises me when a book presents queer culture as I experience it and this book is no exception.
  • The structure and pacing. Everything develops and evolves at a very nice pace. Nothing felt rushed or slow. Each scene and chapter brought something new to the problems at hand so there was never a dull or confusing moment.
  • The theme of found family and finding a place to belong. It came out with August's and Jane's arcs, but also with Wes and the Save Billie's campaign. I like how the theme for the book highlighted what the characters are going through.
  • The prose. The way some things are described were so careful and intentional. It brought out August's emotions and painted them in a way that was easy to understand and relate to. I am also a sucker for lyrical prose. While perhaps not lyrical exactly, there was something poetic about a lot of descriptions.

Things I didn't like:
  • Honestly, I think there are a handful of teeny tiny things that lacked or didn't explore a nuance to the fullest. Since these things are teeny tiny, the book is not obligated to explore them.
  • Not much, tbh

My favorite character is Wes. He's so witty. I love his sense of humor.

I also love Jane. She's the best. I pictured her as the butch form of Cassandra from Wayne's World. No I am not projecting 😆

A light sci fi mystery and some touches of magic wrapped into a romance novel, to delightful effect. I laughed out loud regularly, felt for the characters, and couldn't put the book down. Every character was quirky, even Myla's annoying, "boring" ex, which, while amusing, felt a little forced to me--everyone has quirks, sure, but this level of eccentricity? Maybe it's a New York thing. Whatever the reason, I found it mildly distracting, but certainly not enough for me to warn people off of the novel. August is relatable, as are her friends, and her relationship with her mother. Jane's presence creates an informative contrast to the modern LGBTQIA+ experience.

I wanted to LOVE this. I really did. I’m disappointed that it landed at just a like for me. It could have been a case of wrong timing, or wrong medium (I did audio), but something about it had me feeling like it was effortful to see it through to the end.

I think it had to go with pacing. It felt long. I felt stuck in the story at times (perhaps that’s ironic?) and even though there was real jeopardy, it didn’t feel charged enough somehow to me. Also not sure about the ending being so neat.

But I admire McQuiston’s sharp sense of humour, her ability to create a dynamic, diverse, and utterly charming cast of characters, her talent for romantic tension and her work to create a layered reading experience.

Also, you can’t fault the pancake content in this book.

So perhaps it’s best to listen to the hoards of readers who gushed about this book. Just being honest about my experience over here. But I’ll be anticipating McQuiston’s third book just like everyone else. She’s got talent.

I love this book. Starting this book I instantly fell in love with all of the characters (especially the side characters). I love august and jane's relationship, although I wish they would have gotten together sooner since it is a romance and they spend less than half of the book in an actual relationship. This is definitely made up for though by all of the mystery aspects of this book that I love. Certain parts of this book feel a little unrealistic (ex. the subway is always empty when they need it to be) and the ending was not for me, but I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a cute, easy/quick, romance/mystery to read.
