What an original story!!
At first I thought it was just another “girl meets girl on the train and they flirt while girl A gets over her insecurities”.
But no!!! So much mystery!
The romance build up was actually believable and deliciously paced!!
August’s found family was adorable and sweet!
I loved this book way more than I thought I would. It was engaging from the start!

Casey McQuiston has a way of peaking into your heart and scooping everything out and making it a home for the characters she writes. I fell in love with Jane and i fell in love with August and found family is possible one of the best tropes of all time. I cannot rave enough about how good this book is. Everything, the dialogue, the setting, the tone, the characters. It’s all one big beautiful story that is really really worth reading.

I definitely understand the hype around this book! I loved the concept, and overall I thought it was well-done. The pace slowed down in the middle, but I was invested enough in the characters by then to keep going. I liked the combination of informal and poetic prose, but you have to be ready to fully jump in to the protagonist's mind to appreciate it.

could not put this down. the main character, august, is such a perfect self-insert for me (also a gay virgo with no idea what to do with my life) so i got invested QUICK. then when the story got deep into her subway crush Jane’s ~mystery~ i was so enthralled and curious about where the author could take it. also the sex scenes??? wow. incredible work.

you can set a book up to succeed, but if the pace and writing and plot don’t match up, then i can’t enjoy it. it felt like this book was dragging for the first 300 pages and i just wanted to finish it to finish it. i’ve never DNF a book but i was close. love her other book, but this wasn’t for me unfortunately.

I so badly wanted to like this book. It was so hyped up but unfortunatel I struggled to read it.

Cons-  Jane had no agency, it seemed like she wasn't getting any say in how things went down and August didn't listen to what she had to say at times. There was also the white savior proble  of August trying to fix Jane's problem and telling her at one point that racism *isn't a problem anymore*(or a similar line to that). Which I found to be a disgusting statement considering current and past events. Additionally there were too many plot points that didn't make sense no matter how little I tried to think about it.  It may have been ok if I could've turned my brain off but unfortunately I could not. August was such a terrible character and I found the ending to be unrealistic in some ways. I also just couldn't wrap my head around August being able to ditch work and school for ages and a few other plot points that I won't include here because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone intending to read it. On a final point I found that the sci-fi elements didn't mix well with the contemporary parts of it which is what caused me to have all these issues with it in the first place.
OH YEA there's also that creepy kinda slut shaming bit about August KEEPING TRACK of Jane/Biyu previous partners and being very jealous about it. And also the narrorator and August disregarding the name change near the end of the book to Biyu even after telling her that she'llcall her whatever she wants!

Pro- I enjoyed her roommates significantly more than I liked August.
