This was an incredible read. it really felt like a love story to 70’s queer history told in a way that brings it to the present. Casey’s characters are always people you want to root for, regardless of what is going on. She also managed to make it feel like we inhabited all the place in the story and befriended all of the characters. A really fun read!

It took me quite long to finish this book because, although it was relatively short, it was slow paced and had long chapters. However, I still enjoyed this book and the writing style Casey McQuinston used. The cast of characters was very diverse, which I loved, and they were portrayed in a very real and respectful way. I was recommended this book by a friend and I am glad I read it because I am always down to expand my TBR with sapphic books. I felt satisfied with the ending, and it really made the book for me. The only reason I rated it less than 4 stars is because I am not a big fan of slow paced books (just my personal taste).

📖 One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston Book Review 📖

9th book of January 2022 and 9th of the year: 

Another amazing book by a favorite author! I laughed my butt off throughout the entire book, fell in love with all of the characters SO quickly, and loved all of the representation and the queer found family aspect in it. I fully want to read an entire book series based on Jane’s life, and I also can’t wait to start the author’s newest book! Some author-provided TWs are (on page) drinking, light drug use(weed), semi-public sex, sexual content, exploration of depression and anxiety, memory loss and cognitive issues, familial estrangement, familial death, grief, missing persons, implied PTSD, and (off-page/past/alluded to) homophobic violence and hate speech, police violence, the AIDS crisis, racism, childhood neglect, arson, and a historic hate crime resulting in loss of life📚♥️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

A light sci fi mystery and some touches of magic wrapped into a romance novel, to delightful effect. I laughed out loud regularly, felt for the characters, and couldn't put the book down. Every character was quirky, even Myla's annoying, "boring" ex, which, while amusing, felt a little forced to me--everyone has quirks, sure, but this level of eccentricity? Maybe it's a New York thing. Whatever the reason, I found it mildly distracting, but certainly not enough for me to warn people off of the novel. August is relatable, as are her friends, and her relationship with her mother. Jane's presence creates an informative contrast to the modern LGBTQIA+ experience.

I wanted to LOVE this. I really did. I’m disappointed that it landed at just a like for me. It could have been a case of wrong timing, or wrong medium (I did audio), but something about it had me feeling like it was effortful to see it through to the end.

I think it had to go with pacing. It felt long. I felt stuck in the story at times (perhaps that’s ironic?) and even though there was real jeopardy, it didn’t feel charged enough somehow to me. Also not sure about the ending being so neat.

But I admire McQuiston’s sharp sense of humour, her ability to create a dynamic, diverse, and utterly charming cast of characters, her talent for romantic tension and her work to create a layered reading experience.

Also, you can’t fault the pancake content in this book.

So perhaps it’s best to listen to the hoards of readers who gushed about this book. Just being honest about my experience over here. But I’ll be anticipating McQuiston’s third book just like everyone else. She’s got talent.
