This is my favorite out of Casey McQuinston's current books. I already like their writing a lot, but at times this book shocked me with how much it took the strong points from their other books and brought them to a new level.
No matter how small, every character seems so vibrant with their own story and interpersonal relationships with not only the main character but everyone else around them, which I feel is rare to find in a character. It makes the city it's set in feel that much more alive, and the plot to save a dying local diner that much more compelling. Add in a dash of magic that blends perfectly with the feeling of being a small part of a big city, an incredible found family, and a heist, and I'm not sure what could top this. And it also managed to make the subway romantic. I can't think of a single critique.
This book is so unapologetically steeped in queerness, both past and present, that it makes me want to cry. The emotional core of the story expertly weaves plotlines and history together in a way that had me sobbing. I loved this book.

Come for the L, stay for the BTQ+.

For real, I thought the side characters were a bit more interesting than the main characters

Who was going to tell me about the low key fantasy/sci-fi element? How has this been hyped on BookTok for ages and I haven’t seen a single mention of that?
Anyways, it wasn’t terrible but not what I wanted or expected and the writing style isn’t for me.

When I first started this book I thought I would slowly read it/listen to it while working & just take my time. Little did I know, after the first couple chapters, I just couldn’t put it down! I fell in love with August & Jane, & the mystery that is Jane. It was intriguing, & I couldn’t wait for the story to continue! It brought a bit of fantasy into my romance books, instead of the usual romance in my fantasy books; it was amazing!

Started reading this on the subway during my last minute solo trip to New York, which felt apt. Also, definitely missed my stop.

4.5 something about the way CMQ writes 20-something characters having existential and identity crises has been really hitting these days (┬┬﹏┬┬)

Very wholesome and full of wonderful characters that completed the story. I fell in love with all of August's flatmates and their partners, because they had weird but interesting personalities and dynamics. I also enjoyed so much August and Jane's relationship, and specially Jane herself (mainly because I admit she is totally my type so I was weak on the knees since second 1) and her story. I am not that keen about the idealization of New York, customer service works with long changing shifts and low wages, and the time travel stuff that ended up being less complex than I imagined; but that's all right. I adored the little moments in which we could get a glimpse of the queer scene in the 70s and some really important historical events for the community.

It is always a pleasure to read about horny sapphics being unabashedly unhinged, loud and proud.
