Love love the ghost butch, and many of the background characters, but I'm not into the main character very much. The ending was sweet, but it lowkey felt like a betrayal of
Jane's character for her to stay in August's time. It's a fabulous ending for August, but it's really really tragic for Jane, and it's lightly addressed but Jane loses everything and everyone she's ever known except for August.

I started this book three months ago, at what would turn out to be the tail end of a long-ass reading slump, and that's a shame because it deserves to be read in one fell swoop, not me picking it up where I left off having forgotten details. so I'd like to reread it someday and take it all in at once. this felt much more grounded to me than McQuiston's first book, Red, White & Royal Blue (which was something I complained about at the time in my review of the ARC), which is kind of funny because that one was ostensibly grounded in reality while this one has time travel. but I'm really glad because it serves the novel very well, and McQuiston is good at grounded versus the overwrought antics of RWRB (there's a bit of that in here but it's minimally used for humor, as it should be, not leading the story). this is what all romance novels should strive to be, and I say that as someone who enjoys romance. so fully realized that the romance serves the characters instead of the other way around.

I started this audio book because everyone kept saying it was great. I'm not normally one for romance so I wasn't sure, on my shelf I have maybe 5 and only one of them is queer despite being queer myself. This book might change that as I'm considering going out and purchasing a physical copy.

There was a lot of August, the main character, that I identify with. I'm also someone identifying within the bisexual label with no real experience with romance. I make up lives I could live with people I meet once and then never see again. I love school and research and take public transport because I can't drive and also have no idea what I'm doing with my life now that I've finished my first degree. I think that's part of why I loved the book a lot. There was just so much in her that I can see in myself, including a complicated relationship with family although the circumstances are different.

Jane was also someone I found myself drawn into. Being a lover of history I've spent a lot of time looking into Queer history, although my area of research was primarily that in Australia where I live. But I also know a lot of queer young people who don't know history, who don't really understand why we don't like cops or why the medical system makes us nervous. I hope Jane as a character inspires them to go read about why these things are the case.

The sex scenes weren't for me, the idea of having sex on public transport is always weird. But most sex scenes aren't for me so that's okay, it doesn't take too much away because that wasn't the focus of the story. The focus was the two falling in love and that is what sells this romance.

The highlight of the story, however, was not the romance. It was the friendships. Something this book does very well is show you queer friendships and community. When Niko and Myla say that August and Wess are stuck with them I believe them. When Wess is freaking out about his feelings for their neighbour I can identify that as a conversation I've had with friends. The way community rallies around them when they're trying to save a diner and they elitist the help of the gay bar is something that I could see happening. This book is full of queer rep and friendships and it's something that I loved reading.

I don’t know how to feel about a sci-fi romance like this, if I’m being honest. The premise felt unrealistic and a bit difficult to wrap my head around with all the space time continuum stuff going on but the characters are beautifully written, unique, and loveable as all hell. The love stories are sweet & strong. The found family in this book is so genuine and real. I just wish the main thread of the story wasn’t about traveling through time.

August moves to NYC believing that magic and cinematic love stories don't exist but then she meets Jane on the subway. However theres one big problem, Jane is displaced in time from the 1970s. I did really enjoy this book, and I love all the characters so much, especially Myla, Niko and Wes. They added so much to this book. August and Biyu are now one of my favourite couples in literature. It was so well written and intriguing. I only have two issues with it, firstly the chapters are excessively long, I'm sorry but 40 pages a chapter is too long. And secondly the ending, for me, was only happy for August.
Biyu left her entire life behind and she was just supposed to move on? I think it would've been a better ending if she'd gone back to 1977.
> I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves romance that's not easy and comes with mystery.
