How does he come up with these characters? Masterful. And dialogue like nobody else. But really slow start, and Dostoevsky is a casual antisemite, which needs to be said, considering the history of pogroms in 19th/20th ce Russia.

Lots to ponder. Again, really long, but also not much even happened? Still, a story that could be discussed for hours. I almost feel unfair rating it before a second read through. So much to be said about resurrection, atonement, guilt and love, and more depth in each of those than I know I gathered this first go.

I think what will stick for me most tho is that there are places where shame and love meet, and we may never believe them until they’re almost out of reach.

This had a super slow start but I ended up really enjoying the book. I get why people suggest reading this before the secret history now. I can see how it inspired a lot of dark academia with the murder and the pretentiousness of the main character.
