Keikkui neljässä tähdessä pitkään mutta yksi lause nosti kirjan lopulta viiden tähden lukukokemukseksi: ”Miksi olin syntynyt peilien väliin?”
Kirjoitin tästä blogiin. Ajatuslainoja pääosin lingvistisestä semiotiikasta, päähenkilön Adam Gordonin mielenmaiseman pohdintaa ja sillä viissiin.

I can see how people could like this book but I just couldn't get into it. While it was a short read I struggled to want to pick it up and so I read it over a course of two months. It probably would have been better if I just read it straight through in one day. Apparently the author, who was a professor of my good friend, is a brilliant man with great restaurant recommendations. If anything, I'd suggest reading it because of this.

I have less sympathy for messy male characters, I’ve discovered. I do see myself in him sadly. The writing was gorgeous but a bit confusing.

I really didn’t like this book. I read it. But it was rough in the end. It’s straight up navel gazing and even the best written navel gazing can’t hold up for a whole book.
It’s just. Nothing happened? There was no character growth he just descended into madness and chaos and a refusal to be accountable for any action or feeling. I haven’t been this thoroughly annoyed by a character since Holden Caulfield.
Why did I spend my time reading the musings of an entitled white man??? I thought Topeka School was absolutely brilliant, and this is basically that book but stripped of all plot and the more interesting characters. Do not recommend.
THOUGH, again, Lerner is just brilliant at the act of writing. Just needs to also have things to write about.

Writers are just people arrogant enough to write down the thoughts in their heads as if they were any more interesting, original or profound than the thoughts of those who don’t write them down
I have no idea how to rate this book because:
- CON: I could die happily before reading another novel about a young white man abusing substances while having Thoughts and Feelings about women and the nature of art
- PRO: it's beautifully and uniquely written; I learned like eight new words while reading it (e.g., duende: the power to attract through personal magnetism and charm)
- CON: there's plenty of navel-gazing digressions
- PRO: it's pretty funny at points
- CON: the thinly veiled roman a clef reveals many pathetic traits of the author
- PRO: we're all pathetic so we may as well be honest about it
Three stars it is.
