Oh my goodness, this was so good. The magic system was so unique. I loved the journey Tana had to take through this story. And the theme of learning to choose for yourself even if it makes you seem selfish to other people, even if it’s not what everyone else has planned for you all your life, is very personal to me so I really connected with that.

"I don't want to lose you" he says.
"I was never yours to lose," I say.
This book was absolutely beautiful. So lush and unique. It has been so long since I read a book this vivid and vibrant, the author aced the writing style because I was so easily captivated by it!
Though this book didn't have a strong plot it definitely had characters that steal the show easily that would not even make you think about the plot. The plot is there but the story focuses alot on the character and their character developments which I really liked.
Wolfe was an amazing MMC I loved how he coped with things and how he dealt with Mortana Mortana our FMC was likeable as well, I sometimes yelled at her for making stupid decisions but I really started understanding her near the end a lot.
The romance. THE ROMANCE. It was so so so good, the slow burn was ❤️

There’s nothing better than cool nights, secret trysts and midnight rendezvous on an island of witches… This was the PERFECT book to get me in the witchy book mood for fall.
Witchery is cut off from rest of the world, being an island of witches. Long ago, the people of the island were run off of the mainland because of fear. Now those same people are securing an alliance with them by marrying off the mainland mayor’s son, Landon, to a Witchery elder’s daughter, Tana.
Tana has grown up almost her entire life knowing that this would be her fate. And even though she doesn’t have a choice in the outcome, she’s looking on the bright side. At least Landon is attractive?!?!!
But when she meets a stranger named Wolfe one night, he quickly makes her see that everything she grew up believing isn’t as black and white as she thought. He helps her in a time of need and teaches her all about a type of magic that she’s feared her entire life… something forbidden. And that one meeting turns into many…
I love a forbidden star-crossed lovers trope. Give me those Romeo and Juliet vibes anytime and I will DEVOUR it!
My one beef is that I really do not like Tana’s mother. Even after finishing the book I thought she was kind of insufferable. The lying to her people makes sense for a time, but not forever. It just annoyed me. She was pathological!
Rachel Griffin’s books always make me feel extra witchy! I love them so much!!!

This book and story had so much promise, but fell completely short. Now, I’m not sure if it’s because I read it after the masterpiece that is Ruthless Vows or if it really is as bad as it was. Also, is it YA? Is that why I didn’t enjoy it? Idk.
Let’s start by saying that everything is surface-level: the plot, the romance, the characters. Things are continually told to us instead of shown. The dialogue is some of the worst I’ve ever read; it’s *incredibly* stilted. The FMC is unbearably frustrating and her back-and-forth thoughts gave me whiplash. One moment, she’s okay; the next, she’s not. And the next sentence? Smiling and okay again!
The writing itself was also so rough (not to mention, the amount of misspellings and errors in the book). An action would take place, then a sentence would negate the action, and then the first action would be repeated again afterward. For example, her mother was on the phone, then she was wrapping her arms around her husband in a hug, then she was hanging up the phone. So much of the book just didn’t make sense, was inconsistent, or nauseatingly repetitive, I could barely get through it.
Also, the romance was juvenile, rushed and unbelievable. One second, they hated each other; the next, they were in love, with almost no events fleshing out the sudden switch. Oh, they talked once? LOVE. And I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face: the dialogue was AWFUL.
It’s truly a bummer because, like I said, it had promise. There were moments of greatness: good descriptions, beautiful imagery. But overall, it was just… bad. I only kept reading because it was such a quick read.
