WOW! Confessions of a Mask is so phenomenal. I blew through it so fast; despite the slow placing and long chapters, I could not put it down. Mishima wrote with such beautiful prose, I underlined almost each sentence and placed post-it notes next to multiple passages. He created such realistic characters, focused on Kochan the whole time, but still gave them proper development. What I loved most about his work, though, wasn’t the prose or style or character arcs. It was how he explored queerness. Mishima meditated on what it means to wake up each morning and put on the performance of masculinity, how this can alter one’s sense of self. His perspective felt fresh and unconventional, and it gave name to a lot of the experiences I feel. Because of this, it reminded me of Weekend (2011), one of my favorite movies.
