i don’t know what i was expecting but it was certainly different than what i read! i enjoyed this read, however, even if it’s a little slow in the beginning. a lot of sympathy evoked from fellow lgbtq+ people who feel they must hide behind their own mask.

Confessions of a Mask is a Japanese I-Novel recounting a young man's coming to terms with his sexuality in WWII Japan. While Mishima and I have around 0 commonalities, i was really touched by this novel and it made me reflective of my own thoughts and experiences. I initially read this to gain more insight into (gay) male sexuality and was interested in Japanese fiction but I will walk away with much more. I've had with friends where we struggeld to discuss the nuances of our relationships and our feelings, so it was slightly jarring to read those complexities laid out in such a clear manner by someone who I previously written off because i didnt think we shared any similarities (how could i ever be so wrong). Misima is incredibly skilled at capturing and describing emotions and experiences any young person is going through and there were so many passages where i felt moved. i was fascinated with mishima's precision and detail of describing the emotions and experiences in a way that i havent read before. encapsulates 'painfully honest' and in such a beautiful, unflinching way
