i don’t know what i was expecting but it was certainly different than what i read! i enjoyed this read, however, even if it’s a little slow in the beginning. a lot of sympathy evoked from fellow lgbtq+ people who feel they must hide behind their own mask.

also—armpit kink.

there haven't been many books which required this much concentration to read: Confessions of a Mask is only 200ish pages long, but it treats us to the overthinking of a man who struggles with his identity. He cannot decide what he likes, he can't decide if he even wants to be alive. Every action and every event is a forked path for him as he agonises over how he should feel about it.

It is difficult to read this book if you see yourself in the protagonist's image, and i imagine most people would find a little bit of him inside them. an illuminating effect of this book for sure --- i'd be interested to find out how i feel about it if i re-read it in 5 years' time. Will i read it differently then?

Mishima is paradoxical in every aspect of its life. His writing is no different. And, immersed in the duality of life and death, "Confessions of a Mask" emerges as a heartbreaking coming of age story of a boy dealing with his homosexuality in a Japan devastated by WW II. Mishima walks us through how he hides his desires, with a heavy emphasis on his adolescence and his early adult years.

Mishima's writing is wonderful, however it lacks in this book. You can clearly tell it's just his second publication, since he overuses the comparison to let the reader into his state of mind and spirit. Mishima's descriptions are very visual and immersive, but never allowing the reader to be in the room. You always feel like a third person, watching a story unfold in front of you.

Above all else, this book is mandatory in order to comprehend the rest of Mishima's work!
