There's times when I empathized with the narrator. There's times when I wanted to slap him. There's times when I could hear myself in his own thoughts, something about that quality of keeping up pretense that I understand. Often though, he lost me in his own introspection. HIs affectation of love, his insistence that there is hope for 'normalcy', his self-blinding attitude towards his sexuality, the self-destructive cycles of thought, and that inner sense of falsehood echoed enough of my own feelings and experience, that I will have to hand it to Mishma.

the inability to embrace who you truly are. i find this problem so tragic. the main character lies to others in order to convince himself that he‘s "normal".
but the human brain cannot shut down human feelings.

beautifully written. the book has lots of fascinating thoughts and ideas. however, some of the scenes where mishima writes about main character‘s "fantasies" are too graphic. but maybe it makes the book more honest and realistic….?
i also would like to highlight the story of st. sebastian. wonderful reference.
