4/5 stars

I...liked this book...a lot.
The narrative was really well written and even though I was not a fan of the cannibalism and sadomasochism depicted in here, it was mostly done with taste? idk how to explain but it all made sense in the end. Mishima is one crazy man though

Update: I’m updating this to 5 stars because this story has not left my head once every time I talk about the books I’ve read so far this year and it really left a lasting impression on me.

Exploring the journey of a man who had identity crises infused by the conformity of social norms in post-war era. Hitting close to home, where he has to choose to wear a mask to hide himself from his truly real desire, and Mishima, being an absolute badass for eloquently describing this clearly-an-autobiographical-tale-of-his, the main character's experiences, pains, self-introspections, sexual awakening and more.

While truly beautifully written, I ended up having to force myself to finish this book. Maybe it’s that the subject matter didn’t really speak to me, but I felt that a lot of the scenes in this novel dragged on much longer than they needed to.

-loved all the parts about st. sebastian, the gory fantasy of the narrator
-i relate to povs of gay men about sexuality;; maybe it's the quantity, maybe it's the self loathing, maybe it's the painful introspection
-misogyny that's very typical of novels from this time period and style (kind of like giovanni's room)
-i feel like lots of interwoven freud/jung stuff? creepy but i enjoyed it
-sad and hopeless but somehow not depressing
-definitely one of the top books of my life so far,,, im gonna have to read this again bc i chugged it now i gotta chew it
