It took me many tries to finish this book, but I'm glad I did. If you're looking for a plot-driven story, this might not be for you. We spend a lot of time inside the main character's head. I found many of his experiences to be relatable and I'd definitely recommend this to any LGBT person or people interested in LGBT literature.

Yukio Mishima is a legend. I repeat, Yukio Mishima is a legend. My first book by him and wow! I am so impressed!! This was a complete cover buy because it was so dark and alluring 😬
I am so happy this book didn't disappoint me and also how it was so way ahead of its time!!
Confessions of a mask by Yukio Mishima, translated from the Japanese by Meredith Weatherby.
🌈
This book is about Kochan, a boy struggling to come to terms with his sexuality in wartime Japan, in the mid 40s. He is gay and has to wear a mask to conceal his true self.
The emotions he goes through are written so sharply that you almost feel his struggle, the way he suppresses his inner emotions, acting straight while he is actually gay.
This is Mishima's most personal work, covering his latent homosexuality, his fascination with masculinity and his macabre personality.
🌈
Brilliantly written with all the knots tied in the end and the emotions he struggles with being made perfectly clear. This book is one of a kind. The level of precision, sharpness and details Mishima incorporates in his work is really praiseworthy. It may be a little disturbing for some, but it's really good.

Written by Mishima while he was only 24 years old and no doubt born out of the burning pains of his own heart, this is the book that would propel this literary icon to national acclaim. Not just an exploration of homosexuality in the era of Imperial Japan, but also an investigation of the pain and isolation we all feel, Confessions of a Mask is a startling and emotional portrait of identity, death, and culture.

For anyone interested in world literature this one is a must-read.
