Perhaps the things I valued the most about this book are the honesty and the guilt. Although the latter had me feeling rather uncomfortable all throughout. There is a superior form of inferiority here that I am not particularly a fan of, but nonetheless a significant book that allows you to see repressed and homophobic queerness close up. Maybe closer than I would like.

Don't be fooled by the slimness of this book. What appears at first glance to be a slight volume is deceiving. One could condense this book down to one sentence - a young Japanese man attempts to come to grips with his homosexuality during and after the war - but to do so would shortchange Mishima's genius. Even in translation, the passages leap off the page in their stark, sometimes violent, beauty.

I...liked this book...a lot.
The narrative was really well written and even though I was not a fan of the cannibalism and sadomasochism depicted in here, it was mostly done with taste? idk how to explain but it all made sense in the end. Mishima is one crazy man though
