WHAT IS A.L. JACKSON DOING TO ME?! Ruining me, that's what. I thought Love Me Today messed me up? Well, it did, but so did this one. I love the friends-to-lovers trope, so I felt good about this book. Dakota went through periods in her life when she was mistreated by people and made fun of and, even though Ryder was there to support her through those hard times, Dakota was able to gain confidence herself in her later years. I loved seeing her confidence, too. It's always nice to see a woman that's been beaten down by society learn that they're better than people treat them and gain the confidence they deserve. I also loved seeing Dakota and Ryder's friendship through the years (there are occasional flashbacks in this book) and how it changed as they grew up. Ryder is our resident tattooed bad boy/morally gray man (with a pierced 🍆!!!). Ryder had to deal with a lot in his life and had a lot of issues that sprang from a defining moment in his life (please check the trigger warnings before reading because they're pretty heavy), but he still worked hard to try and be a better man so that he could feel worthy of Dakota and her son, Kayden. Dakota was sure that Ryder didn't have any feelings for her other than friendship...that is until she walked in on him after hearing him say her name one night. đź‘€ After that, their relationship exploded in the best way possible! Ryder continued to have his struggles throughout the book, both internal and external, but he always tried to be better for Dakota and Kayden. Seeing Ryder's growth throughout this story was one of my favorite parts--I just love character growth soooo much! It was also nice to see Dakota be able to forgive Ryder for his mistakes even when others (aka her brother and Ryder's best friend Cody) were less willing to forgive. Dakota's relationship with Kayden was so sweet, and Ryder's relationship with Kayden was adorable as well. I love a partner accepting their SO's kids (it's one of the best parts of a single parent trope in my opinion). As I'm sure you'll see, I did a lot of annotating in this story...again... because A.L. Jackson just has such a way with words, so prepare for approximately 1000 of my favorite quotes below. I adored this story and I'm beyond ready to experience Ezra's story!!

Quotes I Loved:

"The man was lit in a backdrop of vibrant pinks and purples and blues. He was midnight in the middle of it." -Dakota

"But it was the gunmetal eyes staring at me through the fading light that sent chills scattering down my spine. The man midnight at the helm." -Dakota

"Love is on the house. ...That's right. Love is on the house. Free and forever." -Kayden and Dakota

"The man loomed over me. A dark, towering storm. Chaos. Mayhem. Midnight. I felt like I was standing in it. Drenched in darkness and light and this simmering greed that I didn't understand." -Dakota

"Gunmetal eyes raved as he looked up at me. Sparks in the middle of the night. Midnight at my feet." -Dakota

"He left a trail of fire, the man the flame. The one who held the power to leave me nothing but ash." -Dakota

"You are the light breaking the darkness inside me." -Ryder

"And I fell completely into him. Lost in his darkness. Covered in midnight." -Dakota

"And this heart? It's always going to beat for you. Because there aren't enough days in eternity that could make me forget about you." -Ryder

I really enjoyed this book, it was a mix of tension filled romance and some suspenseful drama in the B plot. I liked Dakota and Ryder, their friendship at the beginning of the book was clearly  steeped with their mutual love and pining. I appreciated how supportive and protective Ryder was. I absolutely loved any scene with him and Kayden- the sweetest!! I enjoyed seeing their relationship progress throughout the book. I feel that the drama/conflicts at the end of the book wrapped up very quickly so that could’ve been fleshed out a little more. Despite that I still would recommend this book for anyone looking for a tension filled single parent romance!
