something’s nagging me about this book but it’s too soon after reading it so i’m not sure what it is. maybe i’ll be able to tell you in a month.

this is a fire and brimstone sort of novel. i think it’s easy to say that things are worse now than they used to be but i don’t know how true that is. you tend to remember the beautiful parts of your life because you rewrite a memory every time you visit it. but an interesting and heart-pounding book nonetheless. my not liking it is probably a sign that it’s a worthwhile read

I honestly expected more from this book.

Two things:

(1) It felt like it was written as a script vs a novel. I came to find out that yes, Cormac McCarthy originally wrote No Country for Old Men as a screenplay. However, due to a lack of interest from Hollywood, he rewrote it as a novel in 2005. The Coen brothers then adapted the novel into a film in 2007, which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture

(2) Yes the violence and the narration at the beginnings of parts were fantastic and gripping, but the rest of it didn’t really grip me.

This is borderline 3 or 4 but I’ll go with 3 on the enjoyment scale. I would just recommend watching the movie instead. Especially being that’s what Cormac originally intended anyway.

A pretty solid read, felt like a modern western in a way. It's tense, brutal and unforgiving. I really enjoyed it!
