Happily Ever Afters by Elise Bryant

Harry Potter is mentioned like 3 minutes in, because our main character writes HP fanfictions, with her in stories with Harry and her friend in stories with Ron because those are their respective favorite characters.

Innocuous sounding as this is, it's still a problem to me (and as a trans person, it was triggering too).

I will be reading other books by this author because I had them on my tbr for the longest time (and maybe I'll pick this one up again too), but for the time being those couple of sentences were enough to not make me want to keep reading this today.

The main character was giving me selfish vibes. I ultimately like the book but... Just missed being relatable.

This was a really sweet YA contemporary! I loved the representation, both of Tessa as a Black biracial girl who didn't feel represented by the romance books she loves, and her brother Miles as someone with disabilities who was misunderstood by their community. The focus on Tessa's passion for writing and her insecurities about her writing style and preferred genre really made this book shine. Sam was such a sweetheart and (while I understand she's a headstrong teenager) it was frustrating how much time Tessa spent chasing after an unavailable guy when Sam was right there. I also wish the Harry Potter references had been removed entirely, instead of including a vague throwaway line about how the author has said problematic things. Overall this was a quick and cute read, so I'm sure I'll read more from Bryant in the future!

This was a cute YA read. I loved that it was a story with a biracial protagonist. It was lighthearted and wholesome. The ending was kind of a brief let down though
