This book is my first venture into Brene Brown. I started with the audiobook. She is an engaging narrator and expands beyond the text to connect with listener and describe the impact of the visuals in the printed book. Her discussion of the linguistic differences in emotions is enlightening and easy to read. I didn't agree with all of her perspectives, but some hit the nail on the head. I really think there is something in here for everyone. I was intruiged enough to also rent the print edition and it's gorgeous. Slightly oversized, glossy pages, and great visual aids.

The idea that we don't know what the emotions we are feeling are, which does not allow us to let us experience them fully and react accordingly is very true. I think it's very helpful for all people to examine what the common emotions and human experiences are and how they may apply to our lives. With that basis, we can try to address any emotions which may have gone awry. I was fully on board with this book but the sheer number of emotions that are discussed, especially with the more research heavy lens that this book was conducted in, makes it a bit tiring by the time you get to the end. It's also a bit of a tough book to listen to instead of reading the hard copy. But overall important work and a good read for everyone, but it lost me a little bit by the end.

DNF: I typically love her works but something about this one just really didn't work for me. Other people may really like it, but I enjoyed her earlier books a lot more.

science is not the truth. science is finding the truth. when science changes its opinion, it didn’t lie to you. it learned more.
i have decided i do not enjoy writing reviews for non-fiction books at this time. but here you go!
