I didn't know what to expect when I started reading since this is my first mafia romance as well as my first orc mafia romance... I loved it!! The MMC was so sweet. The heroine made some questionable decisions but those were part of her realistic character growth. I enjoyed how their relationship developed gradually, letting the reader experience how their feelings for each other grew. The steamy scenes were

Skye is a fae who was recently dumped. And by recently I mean like months ago. And she decides to get over him she needs to hook up with someone else. So she goes to meet some random person she met on a dating app in an alley on the bad side of town. She gets kidnapped by an orc mafia boss. He says it’s for her safety. Him and his crew are very nice and honorable with her. But she obviously still wants to escape.  But instead of just listening to him she makes every dumb decision she can. She endangers herself many times and also conveniently forgets weapons or the fact that she can actually punch. She’s completely ignorant of her privilege. Honestly she was so annoying, but I kept reading to see how the story itself ended. I don’t think I can recommend this book, though.

Absolutely hated the FMC. whiny and spineless, pining over her POS ex and makes some EXTRAORDINARYLY bad decisions that even I can't forgive in the intterest of suspending disbelief for the sake of story telling.

So disappointed, I really enjoyed the authors other book, but this one is a flaming heap of garbage.

For some reason I thought this was an office romance but boy was I wrong!

Skye is a newly single fae and on her first attempt at casual hookups she accidentally gets kidnapped by an orc. As far as kidnappers go, Ansel is a good guy. The only problem is that now Skye is involved in his problems.

This book shows a great character development for Skye. She had deeply rooted insecurities and fears about her worth which she slowly works through during her kidnapping. The story shows the relationships between different characters and how these change over time. It felt really well done even though it was heartbreaking at times.

However, I did feel that the plot wasn't in the driver's seat in this one. It felt more like a side story than an actual plot to a book. I would have loved for it to be better balanced.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Deeper plot than I was expecting

This book was a tender but painful story of 2 people with SO MANY ISSUES finding love in a world that is prejudiced. It put forward the idea that to be in a relationship with someone society doesn’t like, you have to actively push back against the hate.
Ansel was a sweetie, but effed up so many times. Both MCs said thoughtless things to one another because of their past traumas. I love an imperfectly perfect couple.

Spice: 5 or more scenes

Triggers: violence, SA, trafficking, kidnapping, captivity, emotional abuse (one encounter)

If you are an avid monster romance reader and like orcs, then this will probably be a good fit for you. I love mafia romance and morally grey/morally black MMCs, but Ansel, our orc boss main character was the squishiest “mafia boss” I’d ever read. (He’s not really a mafia boss; his parents were and he’s out for vengeance.) Skye, the faerie FMC, spent the majority of the book pining for and fantasizing about getting back with her jerk of an ex. By the time Skye finally cemented the fact that her ex never appreciated her, never made her come, and continued to string her along after they’d broken up...she somehow comes to the sudden decision that she’s in love with Ansel. There’s a burst of action in the last 5% of the book that felt out of place given how slowly the story had unfolded. It kind of made zero sense.
I made it through 80% and probably should have DNF’d but skimmed through until the very end hoping something redeeming would happen.
Alas, this just didn’t work for me.
