this book did exactly what I hoped it would do, forcing me to confront a lot of internal biases I didn't realise I carried. truly recommend this to everyone.
Oooof, I wish every almond mom and granola dad and ~wellness guru~ would read this book.
I couldn’t say it better than the fact “that fatness is not a failure and, subsequently, that thinness is not an accomplishment. The size of our bodies is largely beyond our own control, and even in the few occasions when it isn’t, thinness cannot be a prerequisite for basic respect, dignity, provision of services, or meeting basic needs like getting a job or finding food.”
^^ Say it louder for the people in the back!! Fat people are not failures. They are not failed thin people, either! They are human beings deserving of respect, love, protection, and empathy.
(And don’t even get me started about the underlying racism and misogyny that fuels the fat-phobic society in which we live… or the pervasive & dangerous demands of diet culture… or the endless policing of other people’s bodies for personal gain).
My friends will say my “inner Aries is coming out” but I literally cannot contain the outrage I feel on behalf of fat folks everywhere.

WOW! This was my first serious foray into fat justice and I am blown away. I’ll be honest, it was challenging to read. I felt defensive and struggled to get on board with some of Aubrey’s most basic facts. The staggering statistics and painful anecdotes she presented are still buzzing around in my head as I continue to make new connections and reflect on messages I’ve so readily accepted. My big (embarrassingly simple) takeaway: Fat people will always exist and deserve the same respect, kindness, and celebration as straight sized people.
Well written, thoroughly researched book. I highly recommend this to anyone who regularly reads social justice books but never thought about fat justice (and I didn't know of the term fat justice until reading this book!).
It was a bit repetitive at times and I think the information could have been delivered in a more concise way. I did really like the message of hope towards the end of the book which explored what a world without fatphobia would look like, however i wish it had ended on that chapter as the next chapter brings the book down.
