This book is so good and so important. From tearing apart the bullshit that is the BMI, covering the intersections of fatness with race, queerness, etc., providing insights into the substandard or total lack of healthcare that is provided to fat people, and much more, this book should be mandatory reading for everyone.
I also highly recommend listening to Aubrey's podcast, The Maintenance Phase. It's brilliant.

Riddled with illustrative anecdotes and breakdown of research that can completely shake you up. I love Aubrey Gordon.
I’ve never read the word “ubiquitous” so many times in my life, but if that’s the worst part of the book, it’s absolutely worth the read.

If you have been thin all your life I think this will be quite an educational read and I encourage you take take what the author says seriously- however as someone who has grown up midsized/plus-sized this brought up a lot of past emotions that I needed to reconfront while reading. I'm in a better place now but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth, not because Gordon's writing is bad or uninclusive, on the contrary I enjoyed her intersectional approach, but because it reshared a lot of familiar painful experiences I've had and seen done onto others... which is a testament to how real the writing is I suppose.
Thankfully, this IS NOT a self-help-style book on "how to love and embrace your body" where an author just says you need to think more positively about yourself or make some lifestyle changes to fit in to the social norm. I didn't feel that any of the chapters were forcing an ideological agenda but rather just described an honest experience of a fat person in a historically fat-phobic culture(western-based).
I would have liked to see other people's anecdotal experiences added to the book. I did rate this a bit lower than it probably deserves because damn it was painful but I do think it's a very necessary read to be a more informed empathetic person.

I wish I could make everyone I know and love read this book. Absolutely brilliant exploration of a topic that is hardly ever discussed or acknowledged. This book came closer to making me feel at peace with my own body than anything else ever has. Thank you, Aubrey.
Really educational and informative take on discrimination and harassment faced by fat people daily and medically, with a solid review and definitions of different terms and movements and clear explanations of her goals and research, with honest and devastating pieces of memoir. I really love Aubrey's podcast Maintenance Phase which is how I was brought here. I only wish she read it too.

Well-researched, well-written, and deeply thoughtful. A bit dense at times but worth the read.
