The story line is great but I didn't care for her writing style. She captures the essence of some characters. It I especially did not feel like she did Big any justice.... Her character didn't make a lot of sense to me. A quick, engaging read but I could've done without some of the language.

Very fast pace with a lot of twists and turns, which had me hooked from the start. It's a story told by a grandmother, her daughter, and her granddaughter, each sharing a piece of the puzzle as it unfolds in their own world. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough (I did also listen to some parts, the narrator was great). My only complaint, once again, is the cover does not match the storyline at all (thinking of Bonnie Garmus with the awful US cover of Lessons in Chemistry). This is not a romance novel in the least, and I read the synopsis 10 times to be sure because the cover is misleading. My first Joshilyn Jackson, but definitely not my last! 4-stars

Another excellent installment in Joshilyn Jackson's catalog of Southern fiction. The story of three generations of women, A Grown Up Kind of Pretty follows Ginny, Liza, and Mosey Slocumb as they unravel their shared family secrets in order to protect their family.

I thought this was a enjoyable read. I liked most of the characters and the plot was interesting. I think others would enjoy this book as much as I did. Though I would also say that it is not a book for everyone. There are some possible triggers in it. It went at a pretty steady pace and kept me turing the pages. I would recommend it to others.

I enjoyed this book. 3 generations of women living together with secrets that unravel throughout the book. Weaves in the story is a wonderful mystery! All wraps up nicely in the end!

Really fun mystery. It was a pleasure to read and try to figure out what might happen next. Three solid stars, with room for one more.

For my friends: there is some naughtiness. Just sayin' in case you're not interested.

A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty is the story of three generations of women: Big, Liza and Mosey. At fifteen, Big made a curious mistake and wound up pregnant and disowned by her family. Suddenly a single, teenaged mom, she does her best to protect her free-spirited and stubborn daughter, Liza from making the same mistakes. But no amount of love can stop the self-destruction and before you know it, Liza becomes pregnant at fifteen as well, giving birth to baby daughter, Mosey.

Now fifteen more years have passed and both Big and Liza are petrified that Mosey will suffer the same fate. But Mosey is smart and different, in more ways than one. While Mosey inherits their penchant for worrying, but she does not inherit a wild streak. Yet after tragedy suddenly renders Liza indefinitely disabled, all three women discover other sides of themselves they never knew existed for the better, and worse.

A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty was a pretty good book. At its core it was a mystery, but it had facets of plain old Southern drama, complete with wrong side of the tracks bravado. It got a bit confusing at times following the voice of each chapter and what time frame the person was speaking in. The story also takes you for some twists and turns, yet manages to wind up in a rather predictable place in the end.

All this being said, A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty does a good job of touching upon all the things in life that make us grow up, whether we're ready for them or not.

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE AUDIOBOOK

Joshilyn Jackson writes Southern women’s fiction and she does it well. Her books are funny and full of brassy women but have a core of heartache and pain at their centers. This book is no exception. A Grown Up Kind of Pretty focuses on the Slocumb women (Jenny, Liza and Mosey)—all of whom have a secret or two. When a small grave is dug up in the backyard, it sets off a chain of events that leads to a new kind of understanding between them—while also putting their future at risk. If you’re already a Joshilyn Jackson fan, this continues her winning streak. If you’ve not read any of her books before, this is a great place to start. It gives you a sense of Jackson’s writing style and introduces you to some of her more memorable characters. (That Liza!)
