This is a great book for animal lovers, naturalists, or fans of Montgomery's other work, like The Good, Good Pig.

There is a lot of commentary about the author's thoughts and experiences regarding octopuses, so this isn't a fully objective, removed natural history. I found that her commentary added to the experience rather than took anything away. I did long for more stories, research, and facts, and maybe less recounting of dives, but there is enough. I felt invested and connected to each animal the author described, enough to feel euphoric or sad, depending on the situation. I love octopuses even more and hope to have the opportunity to interact with one myself someday.
